With regard to acrolein (uh-KRO-lee-in) and John B's e-mail below:

1) This laboratory webpage
http://www.speclab.com/compound/c107028.htm
lists five EPA methods for detecting acrolein, one being
http://www.speclab.com/compound/m603.htm

2) This CDC webpage clearly describes another method:
http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp124-c6.pdf

An exerpt:

6.2 ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES
Acrolein can be determined in air samples using NIOSH method 2501
(NIOSH 1984). In this method, a known volume of air is pumped through a
tube containing a support coated with the derivatizing agent
2-(hydroxymethyl)piperidine. The derivative is eluted from the tube with
toluene, and analyzed by GC using a nitrogen specific detector (NSD).
Variations of this procedure have also been reported. Rietz (1985) used DNP
as a derivatizing agent on the adsorbent tube, and made a final analysis
using HPLC coupled to a UV detector. Acrolein has also been trapped for
analysis by bubbling air through an aliquot of ethanol, adding
methoxylamine
hydrochloride to form a derivative, and then brominating the resulting
adduct to allow increased detector sensitivity. Quantitation is achieved by
GC using an electron capture detector (ECD) (Nishikawa et al. 1986). A
summary of these techniques, along with methods for other environmental
samples, are presented in Table 6-l. Interferences due to coincidental
elution of derivatives of the compounds is a potential problem of these
techniques....

3) OSHA describes their Method 52 at
http://www.osha.gov/dts/sltc/methods/organic/org052/org052.html

There are pages upon pages of "acrolein detection" Google hits and you
don't need to be an environmental scientist or industrial engineer to
realize there are nasty compounds being emitted down here and that there
are techniques available to detect them. While I can understand that there
may be reasons why the "MPCA asked that these companies try to develop
methods to improve detection limits for a chemical called acrolein," I
can't understand why they haven't applied the methods already at their
disposal. Meanwhile, we are left to ingest a "slimicide" and "military
poison gas" while they dilly-dally. If there is difficulty collecting a
sample at the point source, then they should pull their heads out of their
stacks and collect some from the sidewalk - I can assure you there is
plenty there to be collected. The same goes for the other compounds being
emitted.

There is absolutely no excuse for the inaction of the MPCA and other
agencies. Thanks, Carlos, for your effort - a resounding "Boo!" to the 80
who care more about the Almighty Dollar than the health of my family and
friends.

Well, that was well worth $35. The check is in the mail. As for the
Planetarium, I suggest they merge with the SMM and add $10 to my membership
dues.

Well, that wasn't an unexpected result. Which allows me once again
to update the timeline for GSE on the website, and add a recent
document from the MPCA. http://209.98.144.66/GSE/

I also have to add a comment on the document released by the MPCA
along with an Office memorandum which is pretty lame to say the
least. Apparently the MPCA feels that if they send us enough
information (like the emissions report that is take from the MDH
report) and say things they will fool us into thinking they are
actually doing something. But you have to wonder when you read:

"To fill in the data gaps and get a more complete picture of
emissions, MPCA staff met with testing companies who have performed
emission testing at ethanol production facilities including GSE. The
MPCA asked that these companies TRY to develop methods to improve
detection limit for a chemical called Acrolein. Acrolein is a
pollutant that has proven difficult to quantify in ethanol stacks due
to the high moisture content.

Based on the response from the testing companies, additional emission
tests will be planned."

Well isn't that just pleasant, they are gonna plan for more emission
tests. Despite the fact that they are already known to emit:
Acetaldehyde, Acetic Acid, Acetone, Acrolein, BENSENE, Carbonyl
Sulfide, Dimethyl Sulfide, Ethanol, Ethylbensene, Formaldehyde,
Furfuraldehyde, Lactic Acid, MEK/butyrals, Methanol, Styrene,
Tolualdehyde, Toluene. But they don't tell us how much they are
emitting.

Do some google searches and find out what these chemicals are. I
think you will want to move right on down here and get in on the
TOXIC environment.
