St. Paul E-Democracy Discussion about
DISTRICT COUNCILS IN ST. PAUL
Brewery Cafe - 945 W 7th - April 14th - 7-9 PM
==============================================
Good article, it does give both side of the issue.
One point that it raises that people always forget in this debate is, how much does a
new stadium increase the value of the franchise? The bottom, bottom line for sports
owners is how much is the franchise worth in resale value? New stadiums increase the
value of the franchise to varying degrees. The new stadium in Milwaukee, with mostly
empty seats does nothing to increase the value of the franchise, in fact seeing that
the team is stuck there, it might decrees the value, at least in relationship to other
potentially mobile teams. It makes a good argument as to why the Twins won't pay a
larger share of the cost of constructions, because they don't believe that they will
sell this thing out any better than they do the dome. If they can't put people in the
seats than the value of the franchise doesn't go up and they will be stuck in a long
term relationship with a 3/4 empty stadium.
So, it always gets back to the same point unless the ownership group see some
advantage to owning a stadium (Cardinals own the land around their stadium, etc...),
if you want the circus to come to town, you have to put up the tent.
