This was in yesterday's newspaper. An interesting article on the "state of" and "direction" of stadium financing in the US.

The question is necessarily whether or not the city should contribute something towards a new stadium - but to some, extent how much?

Many people agree that its appropriate for the city to pay for infrastructure costs and/or maybe provide land. Anything above and beyond that gets much more controversial.

This article take an interesting and informative look at how much Major League Sports teams can afford to pay for stadiums.

Can teams afford to pay for their own stadiums?

Jay Weiner, Star Tribune

"Minnesota's stadium battle is falling behind the national curve.

Massive public subsidies to pro sports teams for new facilities -- commonly as high as 75 or even 100 percent during the halcyon construction days of the 1990s -- could become a thing of the past, say national experts.

"If there's a city that allows itself to end up paying 50 or 75 percent of a stadium with public money, then they're not being aware of recent events," said St. Louis-based sports economist Patrick Rishe."
