This program is just starting this Spring. At the web site Tim has linked
to, you can get the list of all the parks in the City. You may notice that
I am the only sponsor or Chairperson of "The Friends of Mears Park" on the
list. That is because I've been doing it now for ten years. I raise money
to help fund the maintenance, help organize volunteers and oversee issues
like maintenance, programming, general care. This park has been the central
focal point for Lowertown's revival over the past two decades. It has been
instrumental in attracting reinvestment not only around the park but
throughout Lowertown. That is the reason the City decided to create another
park in the North Quadrant of Lowertown and structure a "Friends" committee
like in Mears.
As a property owner in the area, this increases the value of my investment.
Parks are one of St. Paul's greatest public assets.
We all own a piece of them. It just makes common sense to take care of them
and improve their value over time rather than let them depreciate. I'm sure
many of us do this already. By working with "Parks Partners" we can
leverage this effort into some real results. Mears Park is a good example.
