What's New In Your Neighborhood?
==================================================
I don't care what we do there, except ...
I have a fave proposal. It is this: Jeffereson Avenue is built to be a
Parkway. No, not the 35E crap, I mean Summit Avenue -- a real parkway.
It's huge as streets go, if I remember correctly 160' wide in spots. Why
it was built so wide without being a parkway for real, I'll never know.
Now, what's exciting about making this a parkway is what it winds up
connecting. Through Edgecumbe (what it becomes at the west) it goes to
Highland Park. It passed by Palace, and that one on the Hill and St.
Clair and Victoria. And from there it goes on to ...
This is where it gets good, because it could go two ways -- one way up to
Smith Avenue and the High Bridge, and the other way though a re-developed
Brewery area to hook up to the Mississippi at Island station.
That is the missing piece that would make this route not just a parkway,
but a major park connector route -- parks from Cherokee to Highland.
Instead of having a bunch of parks in the city, we have a city in a large
park.
Jefferson is the key to doing it, and the redevelopment of the Brewery
site is the last leg of it all. It's a vision that could turn that smelly
old sad excuse for an industry into something that is a legacy, a gift to
the future.
