-------------------------------------------------- REMINDER: Only 2 Posts Per Day Per Person -------------------------------------------------- For those who have been waiting for something to happen since the gasoline storage tanks came down at the corner of Otto and West 7th, the Environmental Assessment Worksheet for the planned residential development is now available.
The full document is available from City Hall (contact Lucy Thompson, 651-266-6578) and a copy has been made available at the Public Library at the West 7th Community Center. A public meeting will be held at the Community Center (265 Oneida) on June 2, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. to provide information about the conclusions of the EAW. This 65 acre site is one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land in the City, and the planned future use is primarily residential. As a former brownfield, environmental questions loom large, and interested people can pose questions and get answers through the comment process. Traffic impacts are also an issue, and are addressed at length in the EAW. This project has the potential for bringing big changes to this corner of West 7th, and has been a long time coming. Residents in the area have managed to maintain a vision for the site that has out lasted plans to use the site for a plastics manufacturing plant, big box retail, a sports stadium, and probably a few other things they never told us about. Well-planned and managed residential use would provide an economic boost for this commercial district like nothing else. But a big part of the reason this project has this potential is because of ongoing neighborhood involvement stretching back eight years. The EAW process is just one more step in all of that.
