OK, you could not have missed it. Several kids died and another is clinging to life after finding their way into the caves on the West Side.

This is not the first, it will not be the last, unless proper actions are taken to either seal them completely or open them up so that they can be easily vented.

Apparently the problem comes from maybe someone burning something inside the cave, which resulted in a high CO content in the air which reached toxic levels. I wonder if they searched for the origination of the CO to see if maybe there wasn't someone else in the cave. I would think that they would have, but none of the news accounts say how far the rescuers were able to search, other than saving the kids.

Now some of the caves might be opened and either used as a tourist attraction, something you can never have enough of, and have tours. Others will have to be opened to a point where a proper survey team can get in and find all the openings and make sure they are sealed completely. I understand one of them has the entire contents of a hospital that was demolished a few years ago, and that most have been used as kind of a land fill sort of thing.

This is not just an issue for the west side as you will recall we have our own cave crawlers that crawl in the sewers to reach caves in the W7th area as well.

So should we make use of them as a historical tourist attraction or do we try to survey them all and make sure they are all sealed and then routinely checked to make sure no one is getting in.
