Here are some quotes from today's discussion.

-------------- Brian Joyce

"If we want to see increased achievement in schools we must help connect a successful future with scholastic achievement. The mentors must be as diverse a group in kinds of jobs, ethnicity and income levels as you can possibly find. I have met many successful people and our kids need to see anyone can succeed with the right tools at their disposal."

-------------- Leslie Snow, Highland Park

"What is the best way for schools to communicate with community organizations to let them know what our students need? Newsletters? Email?"

-------------- Roger Barr, Support Our Schools

"One of the things we hope to learn in this week long forum is what community members need to know about job shadowing and internships in order to provide opportunities for students in their work place. Community members, please take this opportunity to ask any questions about job shadowing and internship needs/opportunities. This is a new topic to our community and there are no "dumb questions." I look forward to this week's discussion."

-------------- Senior at Highland

"I am a senior at Highland Park Senior High.......

I had a difficult time at first trying to find a law office that wanted a short term intern. I spoke to several adults about what I was trying to accomplish and I accumulated a list of possible contacts. I met with a lawyer at the law firm Lindquist and Vennum who introduced me to one of his co-workers, Mark Larsen. Mark was working on a case and invited me to help him in the court room. I spent about 7 days in the court room with him, learning about the process and different approached the both the defense and prosecution take......

It was a wonderful opportunity and I learned alot. Not only about the mechanical aspects of the job, but also the time, effort, and personal interest that go into each case. I have recently decided to attend Hamline to pursue a career as a lawyer based on this experience."

-------------- Senior at Highland

"I am currently a senior at Highland Park. I did my internship at Highland Park junior High. I worked in a ESL classroom. This job required me to help the teacher in any way that I could, as well as working with the kids. It was an interesting experience and I learned the importance of patience."
