Bike lanes are for bicycles only. They are usually painted far
enough from the curb to allow parking. therefore, cars can cross
the bike lanes. Vehicles are not allowed in the bike lanes, that is
why the bike lane ends prior to intersections. This allows vehicles
to turn right.

Bike lanes exist to provide safety to the bike rider and to keep
bicycles off the sidewalk. Of course any serious biker doesn't want
to deal with sidewalks due to curb drops etc. But the real issue is
safety for the pedestrian who uses the sidewalk.

Now for the issue of Prosperity from Maryland to Johnson Parkway.
I would like to know the thinking about that stretch of roadway, the
inclusion of the bike path, etc. I know there is a parking lane.
But it is now filled with employees of the Wells Fargo Bank and the
Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, or maybe their many visitors and
customers. Why did the city allow these facilities to be built
without sufficient parking?

I'm confused about the bicycle lanes. Around the Johnson Parkway
area
there's a stretch of Prosperity that has an extra lane painted on
it, too
small for a car. I've always supposed it's a bike lane, though no
one ever
bikes on it. Bicyclists tend to use the sidewalk, where it's
safer.

So is that really a bike lane painted on the road? Are cars
supposed to
yield to bicyclists? Are cars allowed to drive over that lane when
there
aren't any bikes in sight? Can motorcycles drive in that lane?

And why does whoever came up with idea (of bike lanes) think that
the
average citizen will have any fewer questions about it than I do?
I've
asked over a dozen people about those lanes and the best answer
I've gotten
has been "I think it's for bikes." 'I think...' They think, but
they don't
KNOW.

Biking to work is a nice idea, but like the idea of growing all
your own
food, it's not workable without a major overhaul and a LOT of
training.
