OK, I'll get rid of my second post of the day to explain the purpose of parking
meters. They are not significant money generators, nor are parking tickets! The
purpose is not to bleed you dry and steal your last quarter. I know that it makes us
all feel more comfortable to think that the big bad government is out to get you, but
I'll let you in on the secret of parking meters. Parking meters exist to try and
create an opportunity for one to park for a short time inexpensively in downtown, or
other areas that need parking. If you take away the meters, employees eat up all of
the spaces and shoppers can't park on the street - get it! This is anti-business this
pro-business! I am reasonably sure that Mayor Scheibel tried to have free parking on
Saturday's and it lasted all of three months. Businesses were screaming as were
shoppers, there was nowhere to park on the street by 9 a.m.
If Mpls has expanded their enforcement to 10 p.m. it is because they believe that
there are people coming downtown later in the evening who are looking for a place to
park. When you stop enforcing parking restrictions you have given up on the parking
space turning over, you have in effect said, you can have the space for the rest of
the day/night no one else wants it.
So, I know, it does create a certain comfort level to think that the government is
made up of mindless fools who are trying to destroy business and hate the poor, but
parking meters are there to make sure that people who are going to be downtown for the
entire day either take a bus or get their cheap butt in a parking lot.
