I've got to hand it to you, Councillor, you're damn good at keeping your
constituents informed of your goings-on. I am still hoping your penchant
for communicating will catch on with your cohorts at The Hall.
If a ban is what the people want, then that is what they should get, I
guess. Hard data and common sense seem to be more compelling than the
micro-economics. The Grandma's, Inc. letter (and others) in the paper was
interesting, but I guess I don't have a lot of sympathy for that empire,
fair or not. But the Joe & Stan's of the world may not be able to weather
the storm as easily, and when there are more churches than bars in the West
End, well, the whole yin-yangness of the 'hood will be out-of-whack.
(Flash ahead 200 hundred years, to post-Christian Ward 2...) Not that I
condone what they did, of course, ya know - the gambling thing...
Nor do I have sympathy for the Eagle Street Grille: 1) the first or second
time I walked in there, there was no apparent place to sit or even stand,
and of all the staff I saw floating about, not one stopped to check in with
me, 2) when one goes out on a limb, one must choose a suitably strong
branch, and 3) they've got two of the finest front doors in downtown but
block one off completely because it's too much of an inconvenience and
expense for them.
Nor for Shamrock's, who: 1) have still not removed their lump of rocks from
the sidewalk but have found the time and money to build a patio (nice
fence, though, I must say), 2) obviously care as much about "livability" as
ESG (Le Grille, naturellement) does, as evidenced by their disgusting
parking/used car lot and ugly signage, and 3) are associated with all the
pots of dirt everywhere.
I cannot condone their business practices so cannot join their side. This
is going to have to be a Swissue for me - neutral. I wish the anti-ban
people would've found proper smokespersons like Churchill, Marx (Groucho),
Lennon (John), or Twain !
Hey! How about off-shore smoking?! You could put an old boat in the River
to protect the Head House and if the barges hit it too hard or if it burns
down, no biggie - it's just us smokers on board. There will be life rings
all along the shore anyway. Right?! Might as well allow poker on board,
too. We could all ride our bikes down there, get some air in the lungs,
keep the paths safe at night, look for floaters, etc.. I wonder what the
people of Dubuque think about their boat gambling.
No one's gonna wanna come here if it's all boring and goody-goody. All
this talk from the athletic crowd and still there's no where to play any
healthy games downtown. Give me some alternatives and I'll come downtown,
not smoke, and spend money. Which reminds me of my riddle...
What was the question?
Oh yea, Das Bann. How about huge "ACHTUNG! Rauchen Verboten!" signs on
all the doors? (And in Somali, Vietnamese, Russian, etc.)
Anyway, good luck. What else is goin' on? When the smoke clears, maybe we
can get a sidewalk to the River built so I can get some more regular
exercise. This riding/blading in traffic will be the death of me, I swear!

It was a civil meeting (sorry, no major outbursts) Packed chambers.
In my unbiased opinion he testimony of the pro ban side was most
convincing.
Pro ban:
Gary Schiff, mpls councilmember came over to let us know we weren't
alone.
Ventilation expert testified smoke filters don't eliminate carcinogens
Heart rending testimony from a cancer victim
Testimony from African American community about targetting minorities
by tobacco industry.
Youth testimony challenging us as adults.
2 MD's representing our largest health care providers - "please support
the ban"
and more
Pro tobacco side:
Bad for business
Not about health, about economics
Bars will shut down
Freedom of choice
Quit telling us what to do.
Don't believe statistics.
Smoking hasn't been proven to be a health risk.
The ordinance will be laid over now for 2 weeks, then amendments
considered. If any are made the vote will lay over another week before
it would be up for a vote.
Got a letter from Tempe AR Mayor debunking the convention bureau
assertion that the city regrets their ban. He says it is popular and
reports no bars out of business because of the ban.
Got a message from Roseville today. They are going to introduce one
next.

Hi All!
Am sure that some of us were at the hearing.
Initial feedback on eviiiillll talk radio is that the anti-smokes were
very rude
and the smokers were civil. Odd, I thought the smokers were the rude
ones!
Any alternative takes?
Cheers!
PK
Never smoked (tobacco) but believes in letting businesses determine
their own
policy without politburo edicts.
