Sounds like an impromptu pow-wow is in order! Teepees, drums, love flutes, sweat lodge, and dancing down in the Lower Landing park, below The Mounds (well away from Lambert's Landing, and well before the Official Welcome at 12:30. See http://www.riverfrontcorporation.com/welcome.asp). We could shoot pamphlets of Native history out to the Steambloaters with bow and arrow, although the Homeland Securors might not go for that. So, drums from 9 to 11 on the 3rd then? Can we build a fire? We need an Elder with the Key to the City. Who's the highest-ranking Indian in this territory? "...The drumbeat is described as the heartbeat of the people. The drum itself is regarded as a sacred object to be treated with respect. Each drum has a keeper to ensure that no one approaches it under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or shows disrespect by reaching across or setting things on it." http://www.nald.ca/CLR/chikiken/page32.htm But you can smoke, of course. One for the Ordinance: "...It is thought that medicinal plants when physically picked will not work unless there has been the proper spiritual behavior (such as offering tobacco, etc.)." http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/5579/ojibwa.html I'd love to participate in some sort of Native celebration/demonstration/revolution for the Fourth/GE. Maybe someone could explain to me again the Mississippi/Milky Way parallelism, and the Skunks... Those of us of British descent struggle with the holiday anyway, what with all the "The King Sucks!" banners and stuff, and usually go to Canada or Cuba for a few days 'til the storm passes. But this would be a good excuse to stay stateside and pretend I'm Toussaint Charbonneau or somebody. Andre' MacJibwe Ah-ki' Andrew M. Four years ago when I first heard about the Grand Excursion I was very excited ... through further research I learned that Charles Fillmore (Millard's brother) is buried at Oakland. He died of dysentery in July 1854. Then this summer I've been reading Theodore Blegen's "Minnesota - a History of the State" and learned how poorly the Dakota people were treated ... to the point of withholding food until treaties were signed. Yesterday I sent a letter to the Pioneer Press ... I'll see if it's published. I have trouble celebrating an historic event if the whole story isn't included, especially when it deals with the removal of a people and their culture. Nick Coleman had a wonderful article on Sunday describing the reconciliation ceremony that occurred in Winona on Saturday. I have been looking at the events scheduled for St. Paul, but wasn't able to find any similar event. Does anyone know if something comparable is planned in St. Paul. I noticed the websites seemed pretty quiet about this issue, including Riverfront Corporation. With the past discussions about history standards ... it would be good to see the Grand Excursion portrayed without misrepresentations. Thanks.
