i believe that if one believes their comments to be valid and appropriate, there should be no fear of being quoted (understanding that there is never an excuse for being misquoted - journalists should simply have enough integrity to be accurate and/or confirm the intentions of the quoted individual). i say be forthright and substantive because they're out there, not in spite of or from fear of them.

i'm hoping that, rather than create a climate of restrictive self-censorship, knowing they're out there increase our level of civility; i wouldn't want to be quoted "feeding the troll" or caught using the list to magnify my own ignorance. i won't censor, but i will be conscientious.

Does this mean we have to watch what we say here or
did Karlson contact Mary for permission to quote her? I know this is a
public forum and appreciate all efforts toward civility/productive,
community-building discussion, but am wondering if knowing a quickly written e-mail could
be quoted in the press at any time might cause hesitation. Am personally much
more interested in forthright discussion around substantive issues than
tip toeing.
