This mention in the article does not state she started a thread on the Forum. It says she fired off an e-mail to the forum. Others did too. On both sides of the issue. I am just asking why they chose to only include a quote from one side of the issue off of the forum and not both.
Here is a personal comment, hopefully Tom will find this useful.
The article wasn't about the discussion in our forum, the article was about the issue of politics in the farmers market. I think (pure speculation) that the reporter quoted the post in question, because it was the post that initiated the entire debate. The article was a direct response to Mary's post in our forum - and the author, Karl Karlson, acknowledged that. I didn't see anything that implied or suggested that participants in our forum were universally in agreement on this issue - nor should anyone expect that.
He then went on to include opposing viewpoints on the issue, from both the manager of the Farmers Market, Gerten, and Ron Maddox.
AGAIN, the subject of the article wasn't our discussion - so the author had no need or obligation to accurately summarize or represent our entire discussion. He simply used our forum as one source for the story.
I think that one needs to judge the article on its overall tone and impact - and I thought that the article was very balanced and I did not read it as either in favor or opposed to politics in the farmers market.
EXAMPLE: I think that news stories often originate from the comments of a particular senator or representative. While, that particular Senator or Representative may be quoted in the article, I don't see a need for a balancing perspective specifically from another Senator or Representative. Rather, I look for overall balance regardless of where the particular sources come from.
Its simply well known that Senators disagree with each other on virtually everything, much like our forum. I don't think that anyone will ever suffer from the mistaken impression that our forum has unified around a position on a controversial issue. That'll be the day....
:-)
I hope that this is helpful.
Best wishes,
