Last night at about 11:30 we were driving home from Minneapolis and traversed downtown on the way to the West Side.
As we came off 94 down the ramp to 5th Street I had to slam on my breaks, as did the taxi behind me, because there were two people crossing the ramp, on foot, right under the first bridge. Since that area is not well lit because it's really not intended for pedestrians, I'm most fortunate (as are they I suppose) that I saw them in time to slow sufficiently. I was also fortunate that the taxi was able to stop in time as well. As we came down the hill it was clear that an event had just gotten out. There were people everywhere. As we passed the Xcel, there were people just standing around in the middle of the street. It was tricky to navigate around since you couldn't stay in a lane. Then I came to the intersection where the Ordway is and a minivan came barrelling through the intersection, never stopping for the stop sign. It seemed we were through the worst of it when we turned off of 5th onto St. Peter and a woman stepped off of the curb just as I was making the turn and I had to swerve to not hit her. I thought we would finally be done with the insanity when I turned onto Kellogg, but alas, it was not to be. As I was turning left from the double turn middle lane I was cut off by an SUV turning from the left most lane. 4 near accidents, less than a mile. I can only think that a stadium will bring more of this insanity to our fair city. And look out St. Paul if they were both to hold events on the same night. This does not endear me to going to restaurants, etc. in St. Paul in the future. I would not want to have a repeat performace of last night. If the stadium goes in, you can be sure that any business near the Xcel or the stadium will not receive my business. I will go elsewhere.
