I have contended that Big Tobacco is the main force behind resistence to
smoking bans. Opponents vehemently reject this. People don't like to
believe that monster corporations in far-away headquarters are reaching
into our beloved Twin Cities and manipulating our legislators and our
minds for filthy profit. We like to imagine we are totally free
individuals, not taken in by advertising and manipulation, not ever, no
never, no never, no never. We like to belive that the real dummies are the
rich idiots that spend billions on advertising and "contributions". We
then have to figure out why these rich dummies are so rich.

A ban will make StPaul smoke-free, and be a step toward making it
megacorporation-free.

Here is a very short excerpt from a published article available on
commondreams.

"We also know that smokefree workplace laws are an effective way to get
adults to quit smoking. But the tobacco industry does not give grants to
find better ways to get smokefree workplace laws passed. In fact, it has
done just the opposite by funding front groups to dispute the fact that
secondhand smoke is a health hazard."
