Tait:

I have in the past always been happy with my service with the Saint Paul
Police and have always been careful not to overblow a situation. I will do
exactly as you have instructed.

My other concern is this. In an age when we have the ability to have
complaints of this nature sent to a call center, I fail to see why there is
no way to leave this information over the phone with a trained call center
person, who could then pass it on to an officer or group of officers in the
area as an FYI.

My biggest concern was that of the safety of the kids and others in the
neighborhood that could become potential targets of this person who
apparently has no respect for the stop signs.

I know that it is a low priority, but there should be a more efficient way
of desseminating information to the force as a whole for their briefings
than to make a citizen wait forever for someone to just take the report.
Anyone with the typing skills and a keen ability to communicate that facts
should be able to make short order of this without bothering an officer, and
yet still getting it in the system for review.

I will contact those that you have suggested, and make my suggestion to
them.

Thank you.

BTW: My son has the same name as you, spelled the same way and the only
other Taits I have seen spelled this way are Tait ( A Christian Musical
Artist from the group DC Talk and Oliver North's daughter.

> Dear Pam Ellison,

> I sympathize with your difficulties concerning the police station. It
sounds like an extremely frustrating experience. Allow me to offer a few
suggestions.
>
> With regards to your obnoxious and might I say, dangerous teen. You did
the right thing by getting his license plate. The next step is calling the
non-emergency number and waiting for an officer (which you did). I'm not
sure why the dispatcher told you to go downtown (as far as I know, she
should not have done that). Since the call is such a low priority it can
take a long time for someone to show up. Keep in mind the operator is not
the dispatcher. The opperator sends, via computer, the call request and the
dispatcher decides when the call is sent to an officer. Once the officer is
given the call, he must go to the location immediately and it will take as
long as it takes to get from point A to point B. The dispatcher is the
person in control and they will gage the severity of calls. If there are
numerous calls coming in that are more serious than yours, it could take
hours before you see an officer.

> I suggest an alternative. Get to know your Senior Commander or one of his
subordinate Commanders. There are three Police Districts in St. Paul,
Western, Central and Eastern. You said you live in Como, so I will assume
you live in Western District. Your Command structure is as follows:
> Senior Commander: Tom Smith: 266-5526
> Patrol Commander: Tyrone Strickland: 266-5533
> Investigations Commander: Mike Morehead: 266-5528
>
> Call one of these officers and tell them your story. Be calm and kind and
I promise they will be most helpful. They will work with you to solve your
problem.
>
> I hate to see this sad experience ruin your view of the St. Paul Police.
I've worked with them on many issues over the years and I think we have the
best and the brightest team in the country.
>
> Good Luck. If you need any more assistance, please call your local
District Council 644-3889 (Como District 10) or call me at 848-2002.
