When citizen/taxpayers collectively decide to provide
things that benefit society generally, how is that a
"gift?" The benefits may not be distributed in a
perfectly even way but the rationale for supporting
public institutions and projects is that they benefit
all of us in some way. That's not a "gift."

It may be legitimate to argue over whether any
particular use of tax dollars really benefits society.
But to take the position that using tax dollars for
anything other than the national defense and one or
two other uses is wrong is nonsensical.
