I'd like to thank Dennis for bringing this discussion back to the specific example of Garbage collection in St. Paul. For just a moment, it felt as if this thread was on topic.

  :-)

No, really. General philosophical discussions about Privatization vs. Publicization really don't belong here - UNLESS, they address a specific St. Paul proposal or issue. I'm talking specific.

I'm not blaming anyone, sometimes the discussion wanders. BUT, now is the time to bring it back!

Certainly, the privatization of city services has been and will continue to be a very real and important St. Paul issue - so feel free to discuss it in that context. But, let's stay away from the general philosophical stuff.

Once again, this topic is not off-limits. HOWEVER, when addressing it, be specific about St. Paul.

 - Is anyone here proposing that we do away with public libraries in St. Paul?
 - Does anyone want to return to public management of garbage collection?

 - AND IF SO, then why? (The why is the interesting part)

Finally - I suggest that we avoid very broad generalizations of people liking public services but opposing the free market OR being a free market person who never supports public goods. Almost all of us fall somewhere in the middle of these extremes, its only a question of where - and that gets very complicated - and is also where its both more interesting and productive.

Thanks,
