"I live next door to an alleyway and not a day goes by that I don't have at least one behemoth truck coming by to collect from one home on the block. There are days when as many as three trucks pound their way past my house."
I agree that there are too many of those large vehicles driving around, clogging the roadways, pouring out black smoke, clunking and banging past the house. The air stinks of fossil fuels being burned and the ozone must be being depleted. There are way more than 3 per day, must be more like about 3 per hour going by the house. Oh, wait I thought we were talking about the public transportation busses making this mess, creating noise and contaminating our air. There are far more of them every day around here than there are garbage trucks. I like to be able to choose my refuse hauler. I choose a small mom and pop company because I like to support small business, not the large multi-national corporations who would have the contract if the city takes it over. If the city takes over, then the contract price will have to be much higher than it is now. I believe any contract with the city requires union wage equivalents. This would jack up all of our costs. And as incentive the companies opening bid would be low, but there would be a catch. All the other smaller companies would soon be gone, and then prices would rise substantially and a new monopoly will be born. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't think that public employees should be allowed to unionize. So, I don't think that contracts with the city should be tied to union wages. Tieing contracts to this is just a way to artificially inflate costs of all products made/sold/used in the city. I'm surprised at those who like this idea. This would put the mom and pop business out and bring in the large multi-nationals. Now I like the fact that there are large multi-nationals, but I choose to do business with the small companies. Interesting dilema though for those of the "progressive" persuasion, bring in and welcome the large multi-national and close down the mom and pop shops, or, leave government out of deciding what's best for us.
