Dennis, People--especially folks in the income you mentioned--should have the right to work in a safe workplace. As I understand it (and more enlightened folks, please add your thoughts), the Indoor Air Quality Act protects most workers from smoking by banning it indoors. Only those least likely to be unionized, least likely to earn a decent wage, and least likely to have a lot of other job options do not have this benefit. So, while our Mayor has the health benefits of working in an office that is required by law to be smoke-free, bar and restaurant workers in St. Paul apparently aren't held in the same high regard. We're all equal, but I guess some of us are more equal than others. Dennis wrote: "Proves once again, democrats in power hurt poor people." Again, folks in the know, please comment, but I understand all of the City Council and the Mayor (at least for now, anyway)---both in support of and opposing the smoking ban---are DFLers (though I don't think they're identified that way on the ballot). One pretty much has to be DFL to be elected in this town. Not to let logic get in the way of a good punchline, but if that's the case, how does the smoking ban passing or not passing prove anything about the DFL? Erin Stojan Ward 7, Dayton's Bluff

Here's the REAL simple little fact: When governments attempt to control the economy for the good of the people, they end up controlling the people for the good of the economy. When you consider that less than 25% of the people smoke, and 80% of those who do smoke make less than $35,000 a year, what you have here is not only tyranny of the majority over the minority, but the POOR minority. What's next, no rap music on the streets because it's harmful to the accoustic environment? (er, bad example), no junk cars allowed on the streets because they pollute? Proves once again, democrats in power hurt poor people.
