I've heard a very sketchy rumor that St. Paul is in danger of loosing our TUNNEL of TERROR. I don't know the background of the rumor, and frankly I've never been in the tunnel of terror myself.

Does anyone else know anything about this 23 year old tradition in St. Paul and what might be happening to it?

Care to Scareor Scare to Care?

"The Tunnel of Terror has been a Halloween tradition for more than two decades," said Lisa Dinzeo Hiebert, President of the Saint Paul Jaycees. "We scare because we care. Sure, it sounds clich, but we mean it. The Tunnel proceeds help underwrite more than 100 community projects each year."

The Tunnel of Terror is produced and staffed entirely by volunteers, keeping production costs low so more project proceeds can be used to fund Jaycee community events. One evening's worth of thrills are felt all-year round at Saint Paul area transitional shelters, nursing homes, elementary schools, and even a Midway Little League team.

Event Future Uncertain

While Jaycee volunteers are warming up for ten nights of screams and scares, they also feel the chill of an unknown future for their largest fundraiser. "The psychic tipped us off," joked Dinzeo Hiebert. "So we brought in the fortune teller. It was so weird: the crystal ball got all foggy, and the cards refused to talk. From what we could understand, it looks like the spirits are tired of the caves, and need a new home." Although the fortune teller is unable to the read the cards about the Tunnel's foggy future beyond 2004, the Jaycees and City of St. Paul are working together to find a new location for creatures of all life forms to haunt. "We're trying to connect with the Ghostbusters to design a transition plan, just in case," said Dinzeo Hiebert.

About the Saint Paul Jaycees

Established in 1929, the Saint Paul Jaycees' (Junior Chamber of Commerce) mission is to provide leadership development through community service. The Saint Paul chapter, one of the largest in the state, has a growing membership of more than 170 members, men and women between the ages of 21-39, and runs more than 120 projects each year in the Saint Paul community. In 2004 alone, the Saint Paul Jaycees have partnered with over 30 local, non-profit, and government agencies.
