Look, let's be honest. The reason the Left's got their panties in a wad over Wal-Mart isn't because of their concern over the well-being of poor people. God knows that fraud's been exposed long ago. They're frustrated as hell because the union hasn't been able to get their foot in the door. Which only means that the mafia-controlled union fat cats in their New York City penthouses have one less revenue stream.
Among the many things that amuse me about the left, is that in their fear and hatred of the free market, they more often than not end up cutting off their collective noses to spite their collective faces. Convincing poor people that their unskilled labor is really worth $19.50 an hour not only tells them that education is unimportant, but it sets them up for a fall when inevitably, like the coal miners, the auto workers, the taconite workers up north, and on and on, their companies implode under the weight of unreasonable labor costs that puts them out on the street with no prospects in sight. All so organized labor can extract their dues to pay for their lavish lifestyles (see above) and support their favorite corrupt politicians.
And who ends up taking it in the shorts? The poor people as usual.

Subject: [SPAM] RE: [StPaul] Media that Matters/Wal-Mart
The below is the standard corporate line to ram WalMart down our throats.
No matter that 80% of their goods comes from China. No matter that Walmart pressures US companies to sell so cheap they have to move their jobs from here to China or go broke. No matter that union grocery jobs pay $19.50 and hour and WalMart jobs 7.50-8.50 with lousy benefits and no union. No matter that WalMart gives most of its campaign money to Republicans and Bush - who proceed to stick it to the poor. No matter that Walamrt backs a foundation aimed at ending public education in America. No matter that WalMart is in the lead in a global race to the bottom for 99% of the people on the globe.
No, what the Walmart people do is say, Hey, you pointy-headed narrow-minded selfish arrogant liberals, poor people can buy CHEAP TOILET PAPER at WalMart - and who the hell are you to say they can't!???????
So we liberals and progressives are supposed to bless the most subversive corporation that ever existed.
Buying at Walmart is trading with the enemy.
What's really happening is the WalMart is the lead pawn in the campaign of the rich to take over the whole world lock stock and barrel. And from what I've seen of "conservatives", that's _exactly_ what they want. (Of course, none of them imagine _themselves_ as serfs - just other people, like us)
I say we have to stop WalMart NOW or prepare for a life as serfs.

I don't own stock in Wal-Mart. I've never shopped there, and I doubt if I ever would, so frankly, I don't have a dog in this fight. That's what's great about the free market. As a consumer, I can choose to shop wherever I wish. Fortunately, I have the means such that I don't have to seek out the lowest prices to make my dollars stretch further than they would otherwise. And because I have certain skills and abilities that pay top dollar in the labor market, I will never have to settle for a job that pays $8 an hour, which is probably what Wal-Mart pays to be competitive in the labor market.
My point is, I thought people like Ms. Dickinson were supposed to be advocates for the poor and working poor. Why would she want to banish a company that provides a place where people can buy at the lowest possible price? Why would she criticize an employer that pays $3 over the minimum wage for basically unskilled labor?
It seems to me that poor and working class people benefit from having a Wal-Mart around, given the alternative of paying higher prices and/or having no job.
But I guess some people, like "film-makers" I suppose, have the luxury of not having to think in those terms.
