Discount shopping, like everything else, goes in cycles. Let's see, who
remembers Montgomery Wards and their giant store in the Midway, or Sears on
Lake street. These were giant nation wide - international retailers. Wards
went bankrupt and Sears was just bought by Kmart, who has been going through
bankruptcy. The balloon for these guys will burst too. As urban areas become
healthy and people look to shop closer to home, we are once again seeing
interest in the commercial streets in ours and in other cities. And, if we as
shoppers get tired of garbage that falls apart and retailers who have stricter
return policies than the corner store who knows his neighborhood customer, we
will see the local retailer return. What we probably will not see is regional
chains, those like buggy whips have seen their time pass.

So, chins up folks, don't shop at Wal-Mart not because they are corporate
monsters with no heart, but because they are big junky places with long lines
and annoying, yellow smiley faces all over the place. And, don't eat at Howard
Johnson's or Jack-in-the-Box for the same reason, or for that matter, don't eat
anywhere where they make employees dress up in clown suits (do you really want
that guy alone with your food?). While your at it, think about how much money
you really save when you are standing in line for a half hour in Cub waiting
for the privilege to bag your own groceries, and carry them out to the car
yourself.

Wal-Mart will die not from protesters, but from consumers who will slowly
return to wanting quality and service over low prices. You get what you pay
for.

PS... Tip the kid who carries out your groceries.
