But I think you're right in that the best teachers, the ones we remember to this day (George Janisch), were the ones who challenged us.
I just have to pick up on this comment, because I was very pleased to see Dennis credit George Janisch as a memorable teacher, in a good way.
I went to Central High roughly 15 years after Dennis attended Mechanic Arts. And, while Dennis and I clearly have very different political view, I will agree with him on this point.
If I had to pick out the single teacher which I most remember for their positive contributions to my education, George Janisch would top that list. I believe I was at Central from 1981-83, when George (as he liked to be called) taught philosophy. He was an excellent teacher and has certainly made a strong impression on me. George introduced me to Walden, by Henry David Thoreau. For that, I will always be thankful.
I'm getting all emotional, just writing this email.
George went on to run for and win a seat on the St. Paul Board of Education, after he retired (the same year I graduated). I believe that he only served one term on the school board. I was 19-23 years old at that time and oblivious to school board politics.
I'd like to thank Dennis for prompting me to remember and acknowledge this great teacher, for whom I have much to thank. I suspect that Dennis and I are not the only two on this list, on whom George made an impression (although, not everyone may remember him as fondly as I do).
Writing this post has reminded me of the powerful impact that one really great teacher can have. I know that we have at least one or two teachers on this list. I would like to thank them for doing the work that they do.
Everyone, go out and "hug a teacher!"
Best wishes,
