Thanks, Joelle. I hope you are interested in becoming a co-owner of
another brewery. For a man, especially an Irish one, to call two breweries
too many is like hearing a woman say "Oh, another diamond? No thanks,
Love, I've already got one 'ere!" This is a gem, no ifs, ands, or buts,
and only a fool wouldn't part with my money to buy it. (Just in case, I AM
thinking of forming a PowerBall Pool, so try to find an extra $5.)

You neglected to mention Flaherty, Kimberly, Bredemus, Roth, or Kreitzer
(presumably since they aren't posters), who were also quoted in the story,
but we certainly are glad that Reporter Yuen made the effort to get input
from a variety of people. It is conceivable, although hard to believe,
that everyone may want a similar type o' deal at the site. Can you
imagine?! As far as I'm concerned, my Schmidt "fantasy" is pro-business
and even pro-covered wagon, so bring on the small business owners (the
Waltons won't be as welcome, I will concede that).

It's amazing what a little fresh air will do to a neighborhood, I swear.
Now in today's paper I see that Sheryl Corrigan has gone Six Sigma (I'd
better quit while I'm employed...)

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then
I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of
their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of
work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is
better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be
selfish and worry about my liver.'" -Jack Handy

(From Sunday) I was surprised that I hadn't see this come across the
list. Apologies if this is a repost. The article includes comments from
Andrew Hine, Diane Gerth, and Dave Thune. At the very end there is
mention of a public hearing Friday morning.

New life for landmark brewery?
City hoping to acquire Schmidt site, but the road to preservation could
prove difficult

The old Schmidt Brewery, a now-vacant West Seventh Street institution
that summons tales of gangsters, grit and free beer in the basement,
has intrigued a number of potential buyers â including the city of St.
Paul.

The city is preparing to bid on the property, which will be auctioned
off Feb. 18 as part of a bankruptcy proceeding for Gopher State
Ethanol. The ethanol plant and the Minnesota Brewing Co., whose demise
in 2002 marked the end of St. Paul's historic brewing industry,
occupied the 15-acre site.

While this isn't strictly about St. Paul, I think it is relevant in
light of the proposed development of a lightrail line down the central
corridor.

Light rail may add three cars
Laurie Blake, Star Tribune
January 11, 2005

Metro Transit officials hope to order three new rail cars this month
for the Hiawatha light-rail line to cope with higher-than-expected
ridership.

The Metropolitan Council Transportation Committee voted Monday to buy
one rail car with $3.15 million left in the rail project's budget, and
two others using $6.3 million from Hennepin County.

Regarding the financing referenced in the above article: according to
this article
http://www.hometownsource.com/capitol/2005/January/11bonding.html
Senate Capital Investment Committee Chairman Keith Langseth said that
he intends to fund the full amount of the State's portion of the
Northstar line.
