I want to amend my earlier post.

When I was aboard the Patrick Henry, we occasionally (but rarely) were in situations where we were on public display ... going through the Panama Canal, tied up in New London, a brief stop in Pearl Harbor. In each case the captain allowed civilians to come aboard for guided tours and there were long lines of the curious to see the inside of a nuclear sub. While in New London, the dependants of the ship's crew actually got underway for a half-day cruise and were given certificates later declaring them honorary submariners (even though they never actually submerged). If we had charged admission we could have restocked our rum locker for months!

My funniest experience in this regard was when I agreed to take three marines for a quick tour. About a minute after they had been down the hatch, they were ready to leave. Too claustrophobic. LOL.
