What a day for a rally! About 25 people, including press and twin infants,
showed up at St. James' Gate, I mean the James St. Gate, this morning to
let arriving bidders know that we would not be very pleased AT ALL if
anyone bid on the Schmidt Brewery with the intention of producing ethanol
again. We got our message across to at least 6 or 7 limousines, and
several others including the security gaurds, who kindly asked me to move
my car from the No Parking Zone instead of being a meanie about it.
Brewmaster Phil was the spiffiest gatekeeper you'll ever see.
Being the non-violent "hipstorians" that we are, there were no scuffles and
it was all quite civilized. I made a point to try and shut my gob. It
appears you'll be able to read all about it in all four major newspapers
and a high school journalism class. But what exactly went on inside is
still a matter of conjecture. It does appear that Hendry, bankrupt or not,
can somehow still call the shots and has REJECTED ALL BIDS. From my skewed
perspective, it seems like he feels he could make more money by having a
"yard sale," so that's what he'll apparently do on March 16th. It's all
very annoying. But the silver linings are that there did not appear to be
anyone who expressed interest in producing ethanol at the site, that no one
appeared to want to knock it down, and that the air is still quite good in
the 'hood.
Yes, I looked quite dapper in my Tyvek suit and Organic Vapor Respirator.
I did this not to embarrass my wife and dog, as seems to be the case, but
to draw bidders' eyes to everyone's signs, which were numerous and clever.
Some of my favorites:
Eat The Rich (that one didn't see much sunshine)
Emissions: Impossible
West End Pollution Control Agency (this was a color-coordinated
accessory to my outfit)
Arts Not Farts
Make Love, Not Ethanol
the infant twins had their own sign for their first rally, about
their need for fresh air
and Donna's was so sunny and positive, but I forgot the exact wording
There's far more to this than I know about, and I could be wrong about what
I just wrote. But that's the gist of it.
I think GSE should get a conditional use permit and open up the Rathskeller
to the public. Just wine and beer. Tuesdays could be Topless Night, to
fill the Casey's void.
Speaking of the S-word, since I'm all out of posts and logging off for two
days, let me add that I have no problem with having Fantasy Gifts next to
another of our District's anchoring institutions, Maharaja's. [Did you
know that the blacklight rooms of old are now a whole new experience with
the advent of polarized 3-D glasses? Go into Maharaja's and ask for the
loaner glasses on the counter, then go into the blacklight room, turn off
your mind, relax, and float downstream...] But Aliens is creepy, and the
Smut Section of Video Lease is even creepier. I'm not sure why I feel this
way, other than location, lighting, content, visibility... Back when I was
a porn star ... oh never mind ... it's a long story.
Have a great weekend, y'all!

So what's the deal?
How did the rally go this morning?
Did Andrew Hine really show up in his HAZ-MAT suit?
What happened at the auction (rumors are starting to spread)?
