Why We Need You!
* Groups are organizing to force the closure of the 35E connection.
They will be at the community meeting.
* The vocal minority opposing the connection is drowning out the
silent majority- those that would like Ayd Mill connected to 35E-
the way it was originally planned to be.
* There will be people who will advocate hard for removing the road
and replacing it with a long narrow park.
* We need to turn people out for this meeting so that the city
doesn't waste this opportunity to improve transportation in our
part of town and utilize the road the way it was intended.
* City decision makers need to hear from citizens who have
experienced improvements as a result of the test and who will
further benefit if the connection is made.
* The proposed 4 lane alternative is the best option- other proposed
uses and plans such as a 2 lane road are not getting the City the
best deal. For example, a 2 lane road would be maxed out with
traffic the day it was opened- we deserve the best option! History
* Ayd Mill Road has been a topic of debate for a generation.
* Built nearly 40 years ago to connect Interstate 35E to westbound
Interstate 94. Controversies surrounding the construction of 35E,
the connection limited the project. It was never completed and the
road sat idle for years.
* In June 2002, Saint Paul Mayor Randy Kelly opened the connection
at the south end of Ayd Mill Road with 35E to Selby Avenue for a
one-year test of the neighborhood impacts.
* One year later, the test data showed that much of the traffic that
had been impacting residential streets had moved to Ayd Mill Road.
* As promised and as part of the process to resolve the issue of Ayd
Mill Road, the Mayor held a public hearing to learn neighbors
concerns regarding the test connection.
* At that meeting, more than 100 supporters of the Ayd Mill Road
connection attended the public hearing.
* Supporters from the neighborhoods and the business community near
the road dominated the testimony and demonstrated to the Mayor
that the continued connection between I-35E and Ayd Mill Road
enjoyed significant support at the neighborhood level.
* That support changed the terms of the debate. The Situation Today
* An environmental impact statement that is a critical component of
the reconstruction of Ayd Mill Road has been released for public
comment.
* That EIS has determined that the best solution for the road is to
keep it connected to I-35E, rebuild the current four lane road as
a four-lane parkway, extend it to I-94 with an indirect connection.
* Traffic has been greatly reduced on city streets and could
decrease even more with a connection to 35E.
* Studies have shown that it will be used primarily by City
residents- 70% of traffic will be from inside St. Paul.
* This will make the road better serve the City as it will help
people get to businesses in our market area and move people more
efficiently.RSVP on attendance and testimony:
