Here's a personal reason why my kids and I are going to the capitol tomorrow.
Battle Creek Elementary - which has been amazing for the two of my kids going
there
- is looking to lay off eight staff positions next year despite increased
challenges
in language, special education, and other areas. My first grader came home
with the
news that her classroom aide is on the chopping block for next year, leaving our
outstanding teacher trying to meet all the individual needs of 26 kids (likely
more,
as teachers will also be cut and force more kids into each classroom).
This is real - this isn't some imagined consequence down the road, though our
political leadership seems to think they can keep pushing off consequences past
the
next election. I could go on and on about what the schools are doing to
prepare our
kids for the next generation workforce, etc... You know all that. Realize
this:
these cuts are happening right now, they are affecting kids right now, and we
will
be paying the price for it for many years to come.
