Interesting comments from various folks regarding Chris Coleman and
the DFL endorsement.
First of all the person elected mayor is serving the entire city,
not just those who supported him in the endorsement process.
Second, we have had various posts from folks about the endorsement
process and how flawed it is. Now we have comments about a
candidates support for past endorsements etc.
While the candidate's past position on GSE and the airport would be
something to review in deciding whether to support a candidate or
not, their position on past candidates, endorsed or not should not
be a factor.
While those who still believe the endorsement is actually the
wishes of that party's supporters it is not. It is only an
anointing of those who have influence in the party. Dennis, Chuck
and others may argue its not. But most people do not have the time
to be consistently involved in party. The result is those on the
inside serve on endorsing committees, make the rules, and run the
conventions.
When was the last time we elected a DFL mayor that was endorsed by
the city convention? Do you think its possible that an unendorsed
candidate will win the primary and the city election again? I do.
So why would a candidate who wanted to be Mayor agree to abide by
the endorsement process? The only reason is that they think the
endorsement will be theirs or they are only willing to serve if
others think he/she should serve.
Lets keep our discussion on this race to the issues that are
important to city residents. Lets hear facts about candidates
positions etc.
Frankly, action a candidate took while in office on GSE would
impress me more than his/her support of airport expansion. Part of
this is due to the issues raised over the years by GSE opponents.
Part of this is due to the fact that I don't agree with the
statements made by opponents to the airport.
