As a DFLer preparing for precinct caucus night, I've been examining the
current field of candidates, their positions, their backgrounds, and
their ability to carry out a winning campaign. As a former St. Paul DFL
chair, I would recommend that we ask the candidates these questions:
1) As of the last financial report, the two candidates actively
seeking DFL endorsement for mayor had each raised less than $10,000.
This is a race that will require no less than $500,000, and probably
more, based on recent experience. How committed is each candidate to
reaching this difficult goal?
2) Where do these candidates stand on the most difficult and
controversial issues of city governance and neighborhood quality of
life? One of the most important issues for my neighborhood is the
proposed construction of the Holman Field floodwall. At a mayoral forum
in January, neither Coleman or Ortega gave a clear and compelling answer
to the question about where they stand on this important future issue.
What about Ayd Mill Road, property taxes v. assessments, affordable
housing, and living wage jobs?
When you go to caucuses tonight, remember that the caucus is one step
in the process to endorse a candidate. The DFL endorsement process
gives us all a chance to build strong viable candidates who will have
earned our endorsement, so that together we can take back the mayor's
office in November.
