My biggest frustration with the Ayd Mill road rebuild issue is that I don't
understand why it is a priority. Setting aside for a moment needs in other
departments - like public safety - Has anyone at City Hall prioritized a
list of capital investment projects in the city? If they have can they
demonstrate how these projects are ranked?
On major roads - I can think of a dozen roads in the few parts of the city I
frequent regularly alone that need to be rebuilt because they are falling
apart - the stretch of Hamline just outside of the presentation last night
for one - completing the upgrade of Selby from Western to Fairview is
another. I think these would prove to be of greater value to city residents
& businesses than a rebuilt Ayd Mill Road. In my opinion - few things could
make this city look better than developing empty lots and fixing broken
streets.
On city streets - My neighborhood is slated for one of the complete street
replacement projects this summer for which I will be assessed a few thousand
dollars or more. Should the city be putting its money into reducing
assessments? - or into adding amenities to that project? - or speeding it up
so more neighborhoods get rebuilt sooner?
There are also many development projects I would rather see. What would
happen if the city put $20 to $40 million into developments along University
between Lexington & Snelling - where vast amounts of land are underutilized?
I'll bet the members of this forum could come up with hundreds of similar
projects across St. Paul.
