This is what I learned late yesterday afternoon from someone up on the Hill
about the Holman Field Dike. A lobbyist by the name of Ron Jerich has been
pushing to include the Holman Field Dike on Mayor Kelly's behalf at the
legislature. It turns out that Ron Jerich lobbies for Northwest Airlines as
well as big tobacco. (I have included his registered lobbyist information
below.)
If funding for the Dike is not included in the state bonding bill, and the
Metropolitan Airports Commission, or MAC, still wants to build the dike, it
will have to be largely constructed with funds from the MAC. This means
Northwest Airlines would pay the bulk of the cost, since Northwest is the
largest customer of the MAC. So it appears that Mayor Kelly and Mr. Jerich are
trying to save Northwest Airlines a ton of money, by having the taxpayers foot
the bill for the dike, instead of Northwest Airlines, who would be the primary
beneficiary, by having more private and cargo air traffic diverted to Holman
Field.
Thus when Mayor Kelly says he wants the dike constructed so a few corporate
officials can park their jets at Holman Field, instead of having to travel that
much further to Lindberg field, (as if that were a valid reason in the first
place), Mayor Kelly, once again, is being less than honest.
This source said the decision whether to keep the funding for the Holman Field
Dike will be made within the next 24 hours, (now probably about 10) and that
people need to contact their St. Paul State Senators and tell them to contact
Bonding Committee Chairman Keith Langseth and tell him to take the funds out of
the bonding bill.
