If you believe as I do that TOP quality public preK-12 education in this
state is critical to everyone's future, please pick up your phone and make a
call to the Governor, Legislative Leadership, and your local legislator
RIGHT NOW as part of a wonderful VIRTUAL RALLY FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION going on
at this moment.
Our message needs to be heard. NOW!
Apparently lawmakers are hearing from people about gay marriage and casinos.
They are not hearing from enough people about investing in public education.
That might be the reason that funding for public education took two hits
this week:
First the House approved a self-imposed cap on state spending that limits
the amount of funding public schools can receive. Then the Senate passed a
budget balancing bill that provides no increase for education funding. In
addition, the Senate is considering a budget resolution only $136 million
over the Governor - not an amount sufficient to fund the bi-partisan
Kelley/Meslow legislation.
This was the first chance lawmakers had this legislative session to keep the
promises they made during the campaign and after the Statewide Rally for
Public Education in March.
They didn't do it.
The coming days will provide them with more opportunities to invest in our
schools. That's why it's so important for them to hear from us TODAY.
