Rumor has it that Yost has been charged with describing his version of
the floodwall story for Sunday's paper. Here's my prediction for how it
might read:

Over the objections of a bunch of silly St. Paul neighbors, who believe
that their residential quality of life matters, and an even more
ridiculous group of wild-eyed environmentalists ranting about something
they call "wildlife habitat," Randy Kelly prevailed against all odds in
eaking out a million dollars from the bonding bill for the Holman Field
Floodwall. All our brave mayor had to do in return for this beneficial
public improvement was sell what remains of his soul to the governor --
a small price to pay, I'd say. (Who needs a soul?)

Through their brilliance and determination, Mayor Kelly and his friendly
mascot, Representative Tim Mahoney, succeeded in convincing the governor
that EVERYTHING else Saint Paul was seeking in its $58 million bonding
package was peanuts compared to the floodwall project. At the Pioneer
Press we praise them for having their priorities in the right place.
Who cares about the Ordway and Como Park, when you can secure 1/29th of
a floodwall?! Tim Mahoney's devotion to the airport project was so
great that some say he told the Guv, "If you need to, take the $1
million out of the Phalen Corridor...that's small potatoes when you can
buy 1/29th of a floodwall!"

Of course, we here at the Pioneer Press know that there was only one
reason those progressive DFLers in the legislative delegation opposed
the floodwall. It wasn't their longtime commitment to either the river
environment or the city's neighborhoods, but a deliberate effort to get
back at Mayor Kelly for his support of the President of the United
States!! And you know what, so crafty were they in their disdain for
the mayor that they let Phalen Corridor and Central Corridor funding
slip through...so no one would know that they really dislike the mayor's
support of the President.

Finally, we couldn't be happier that the mayor sacrificed the $58
million St. Paul bonding agenda for the floodwall - letting the Governor
send $22 million to Rochester of its biotech initiative with the U of M
instead of ours. No, we're glad to have that 1/29th of a floodwall -
because that should be just enough to ensure that we can get our paper
delivered from our printing plant down on the floodplain. Down with
neighbors, environmentalists and most of the St. Paul legislative
delegation and Hooray for RK!!!
