As usual, Jane hits the nail on the head. Conveniently for him, the Mayor doesn't want to talk about political affiliation. Except...
I found the statement about not appealing to political affiliation ironic, given that the focus of the letter was appealing to the reader based on the fact he was still running as a democrat.
I also found the statement that he "would not appeal to...prejudice based on race...or national origin" ironic, in light of the fact that the stationery on which the letter was printed had a green colored logo that prominently includes a shamrock, as was the case in 2001. Clearly, these elements are meant to have an appeal to certain voters. Incorporating these elements right in the logo always seemed unfortunate and out of touch to me, especially in an evermore multicultural town.
That said, there's something greater to latch on to here. I am reminded how tremendously exciting it will be to have the opportunity to support a candidate who will bring a new, fresh vision to our city. In just a short month, I hope those many of us who have paid attention to Randy Kelly's record will get together and find a new candidate to support as our next Mayor, and we'll begin to transform the debate we are having in St. Paul, and instill a sense of optimism and cooperation we haven't seen in some time.
With excitement and hope,

I thought the most poignant and amusing part of Randy Kelly's "Fair Campaign Pledge" was his nondiscrimination clause, "I shall not appeal to and I shall condemn appeals to, prejudice based on race, creed, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, or political affiliation."
Ain't it just the height of political correctness not to talk about politics during a political campaign?
