Four years ago, then-DFL State Senator Randy Kelley sought the DFL endorsement
for Mayor. He had a substantial number of delegates from the Ward conventions
and he was in the running for a number of ballots. Contrast that situation
with the results from this year's Ward conventions, where not one subcaucus
identified as supporting the incumbent, not one sign for his campaign was
placed on the walls, and, where each Ward convention was addressed by
candidates for Mayor, the incumbent couldn't even be bothered to attend his own.

It would be one thing if the City DFL had acted badly. But just two years ago,
one year PBE (pre-Bush endorsement), Mayor Kelly addressed the City DFL
convention. He was well received. Even if many delegates were unhappy about
his running against the endorsed candidate, everyone (yes, everyone) was
polite. I was impressed at the air of reconciliation that seemed to be
blooming (Glasnost, anyone). This all changed with a certain endorsement last
year. The funny part is, Randy Kelly's reputation in transportation has him
building lots of bridges, but here he set a big one on fire. That's entirely
his doing, and the partisan results of that act were easily predictable.
