I was having coffee yesterday morning at Golden Thyme on Selby avenue and
reading the pioneer press when Mayor Kelly and his assistant, Don Johnson
walked in. They each got a cup of coffee, it's the best coffee in the twin
cities, and then came to sit with me to yak for awhile.
Now I might not agree with the Randy on all the issues (do I agree with anyone
on all the issues) but he's pretty much the same Randy I've know for a long
time. I don't think he's gone to the dark side or is headed for hell as some
people would like us to think.
He is a family man that has worked very hard in public service for many, many
years for the people of St. Paul. And as many of you know, that doesn't have a
lot of financial rewards and is only for those people who are into self abuse.
But sometimes, when things really come together, and you get that one little
thank you card from the kid thanking you for the sports program in his
neighborhood or the old folks thanking you for the neighborhood revitalization
intiatives, it's all worth the crap you have to put up with.
Anyways, Randy and I discussed all the problems facing St. Paul and I, of
course told him how to fix them. We talked about TIF, Twins, Education,
children, diverse neighborhoods, downtown, business. We had a nice talk. I
asked him how his family was and he inquired about mine. Then after about
10-15 minutes Don whisked him off to the next hand shaking opportunity.
No, I do not agree that Bush was the best presidential candidate out of the
last election. I also do not agree that Randy Kelly is not a Democrat and
should be demonized by the DFL.
I hope the DFL uses some sense and stops badmouthing the two candidates that
are left in the endorsing process. I don't blame Randy for getting out of the
endorsement process. It doesn't make any sense to stay in and get badmouthed
by people you have worked side by side with for years.
I'm sure he will tell his supporters who he wants them to endorse in the
process and he will have the candidate he wants to run against. He is a smart
politician.
Thanks for spending the time talking with me Randy. And I'll take you out for
a beer as soon as the Twins stadium is built in St. Paul. Heh heh. Just
thought I would add that to get everyone riled up.
