There was once a time I'd jump into a design contest like that. But no more.
Personally, I like the whale tail and think there's a good chance they'll end up with something worse. Witness the awful vanity plate design for the arts. Designed by Wayne Thiebaud -- A wonderful California painter with an international reputation (as a side note -- I used to exhibit at the same place as he in NYCity -- Allan Stone Gallery) But that art license design is weak -- terrible and I do not support bad art. Judging by your previous recommendation for Coastal Commission activism, I thought you were suggesting here that I support environmental causes in California by purchasing the Whale Tail vanity plate. I was already preparing my reply: I've tried all sorts of ideas but all taken. The Support Education vanity plate allows use of several symbols. The hand, the heart, etc. I was reminded of that one day when I bumped into a lady from the local frame shop. I wanted to tell her about an Open Studio event I would participate in the following week. So I said, "I don't know if you remember me, but . . . " And she jumped in and said "I remember you, you're the artist." Which pleased me no end. I told her about the upcoming festivities and we parted ways. Afew minutes later a friend walking with me said, "See, John? You're the artist!" We both chuckled. But I must admit, it did make me happy to be thought of that way. I tried doodling out something on the vanity plate page for DMV and came up with this, which is available. (My wife says it's available because it's also undecipherable.) I M T (heart-symbol) I S T It looks like it's supposed to mean "so and so loves so and so". But if the heart symbol is spelled out instead of understood as a substitute for the word love it reads like this: IMTHEARTIST And I like that -- but I haven't done it 'cause we're about to go into a COUNTRY FIRST FINANCIAL COLLAPSE and I don't want to be shot as an elitist with a vanity plate on my foreign made truck.
