At least it wasn't in Greer v Buckley. I don't know that fear is the right word. Conflict of interest just shouldn't be an issue with a moderator because it can cut both ways. That said, whether by design or the result of Palin's stage presence, I felt Ifill was largely transparent. Staying on topic wasn't a big deal in this debate. Ifill did nothing to drag either candidate back on topic. I thought Joe was a much better liar. He made several factually incorrect statements, but delivered them with professional poise, confidence and forcefulness. And Palin didn't respond to them all. Claire McCaskill pointed the way for spin doctors -- "Sarah didn't deny this and Sarah didn't deny that."
