Let's see . . . Deserve . . . "from Latin deservire ‘serve well or
zealously.’

Zealous . . . "from a medieval Latin derivative of Latin zelus ‘zeal,
jealousy.’

Jealousy . . . "may imply an intense effort to hold on to what one
possesses . . . often associated with distrust, suspicion, anger, and
other negative emotions . . ."

So, to paraphrase; DESERVE "may imply . . . an intense effort . . .
to serve . . . often associated with distrust, suspicion, anger and
other negative emotions."

No, maybe I should follow the definition trail having to do with with
envy
