Here's an interesting article about the scanned brain activity of psychopaths: from the New Yorker http://tinyurl.com/6kefko It notes that when presented with words like love and mother everyone responds with both the language part of the brain and the emotional part of the brain. The same thing happens with concepts like pain and punishment. Psychopaths only respond in the language part of the brain.
