Here's the biggest moon I've seen in a while . . . from yesterday evening. http://tinyurl.com/66dyd8 I'd just be too dizzy from sleep deprivation to paint the star trails. Or maybe I would BECAUSE I was dizzy, I dunno. Usually with things that change, like shadows or the tumble of hair on a face, drapery on a model, position of stars in the sky, cow in a field, etc. an artist will paint all over the canvas, organizing the composition, then when everything happens to be just so, THAT'S when you focus on this area or that. Then you stop after the expression is gone or the cow has moved. It's called "Don't chase the nose." for figurative artists and "Don't chase the shadows" for landscape painters. When painting a face a noob might paint the sihouette just right but then start in on the features not noticing the sitter has moved. So the silhouette faces one way and the face is shifted three degrees toward the relaxed side. It's inevitable that the person posing will move. You have to watch for it, call them back into the pose or shift around so your view of the face matches the view of the silhouette. In the case of stars (with which I have small experience) I'm imagining painting a grouping over here at one in the morning and then a four in the morning painting that same grouping again in another location, not even realizing the mistake. Or as in the above mentioned example painting them here. Then scrubbing them out and painting them there, then scrubbing them out and painting them way over there. That's "chasing" them and you have to just decide where they're going to be in your painting and leave it at that.
