It's hoarfrost so there has to be sublimation of water then the water  
vapor needs a sub-freezing surface to crystalize on. There wouldn't be  
any wind in those gaps between the rocks. It was just so unusual to  
see the frost on the vertical surfaces but none on the top surface of  
anything, it was only between the rocks and only in specific  
locations. Whatever the conditions which led to its formation like  
that it was pretty cool to see.
