The selector language alone makes JQuery an indispensable tool.

There's nothing in it you wouldn't have written yourself for an include, if you 
were a genius with too much time on your hands.

I don't quite grok what you're trying to do, but you could easily use those 
selectors in an eval statement.

I tend to ID everything now, just for this purpose. If you don't want to add an 
ID, you can use:

$('select[name='myname'] option:selected).val()

It's impossible to stress just what a thing of beauty JQuery is.

I recommend JQuery In Action, if you're looking to do more reading.

It is completely documented online, though, if you're looking to just work 
through it by trial and error:

When you get to the sections on AJAX, make sure you're wearing a hat or 
something to catch your brain. It handily condenses pages of AJAX code into 
discreet functions and saved me from reading the 2 thick books I had purchased 
on asynchronous Javascript =)
