I don't give my dogs plastic to chew, nor those salted, dried pig ears, and a cow hoof wouldn't last 15 minutes with Fletcher. It's dangerous to offer those big heavy bones from the pet store since they are smoked which makes it easier for them to splinter. Raw bones don't splinter, and if they're not weight-bearing bones, they can be completely devoured.
Today's saturday, so there's most likely a farmer's market near you. Find someone selling pastured pork or beef, and ask if they have neck bones. Should run $2 - $2:50/lb. Heavy leg or marrow bones should be avoided since they're too hard for her teeth. Neck bones also called soup bones are complex shapes, have plenty of meat and the bones are soft enough to be eaten completely. Put her in the shade outside with one of those, and she'll get to work out some of that urge to chew. Once they get to experience "real" chewing, they tend to not be interested in destroying household objects anymore. My dogs put certain bones "away" for later chewing, usually spinal columns or large knuckles, but they have a collection of ostrich femurs buried around the yard that I'm sure will cause the next owner some consternation - they look human... :) YMMV, YKMV outside the US -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "StrataList-OT" group.
