my first thought was thats no Bird of Paradise
this is a Bird of Paradise

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strelitzia

it is also an exotic from south Africa ..

could pretty plants introduced for the prettification of household gardens
not be the stupidest thing

the list in Australia of feral introduced plants is incredible ...
Strelitzia isn't to bad
it is easily constrained ....

but there are these other "pretty" plants like lantana, morning glory,
Aspidistra

that i wage a constant never ending losing battle with

i loathe the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspidistra

the most some time in the past in must have been over 20 years ago as we
have live at the house for at least that long somebody planted it as a
border between the house lawn and the rain forest ....

it pops up colonies if I relax my guard

it isn't even pretty .. it flowers underground ... and builds this web of
roots and tubers that make an underground mat that stops any other plant
from growing
my experience of it is it just need some microscopic piece of root or tuber
to
return to its plan of world domination ..

the matt of roots doesn't go very deep so planking borders and stones at
least detained it while i got rid of it took days and rouge ones still pop
up ..... it wouldn't surprise me to see it jump the fence at any time ...

this is how the garden looked 09/2010

http://mxara.wordpress.com/2011/08/29/565/

the rain forest is pic
P9060175
it belongs to the Queen

... wont get up there for another month
probably a disaster area ..

the seeds quite a ways off (this is their dispersal method...the seeds are
toxic to keep critters from eating them) I've seen them fly 10-15 feet, so
it's remotely possible one popped open into a sufficient wind to carry it up
over the roof...I do have one tall plant close to the east side of the
house.
