Report from limbo: clonezilla works great once installed on a flash drive! Much faster than DU, about 3.5 Gb/minute. It's a bit tweaky at first, but then merrily copies the whole drive or whatever pieces you want. Still haven't figured out the network issue yet, but glad to have this piece of the puzzle sorted out.
