I updated iPhoto a couple of days ago but I hadn't opened the program yet. Did so after reading this. It took about 5 seconds to update the library but I don't keep much in it, mostly just stuff from other people I want to keep but separate from my own library managed by Lightroom.
Have you run any checks on your disc structure, something like DiskWarrior or TechTools?
